Ragavanantham Shanmugam is the program advisor and assistant professor of Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Technology at Navajo Technical University, Crownpoint, New Mexico. His research interests include
“Embarked on a quest to groom engineers who can bridge the gap between conceptual learning and industrial application.”
I have been mentored by Dr. Raggs (Ragavanantham Shanmugam) for the past year and been amazed at his guidance and knowledge of the professional world of engineers. He has been fully supportive of my goals to further myself and the community, his commitment to the school has been very inspirational. Without his help I wouldn’t have been to achieve the degree of academic excellence I am developing under his mentorship. Opportunities to go to symposiums and conferences around the country, were sponsored by Dr. Raggs through his and department grants and he personally grooms me to do presentations on a professional level. I have also been able to receive an abundance of certifications and knowledge as a student intern with Dr. Raggs. I have taken 3 of his classes and can say that standard of teaching he has have pushed me to be a better student. As being a pupil of Dr. Raggs, I am confident that I continue to excel in my education and will be successful in my career. Thank you
Hi all, I am one of the student interns of Dr. Raggs and I am also his student in his Engineering Materials Class. The motivation he imparts towards student’s career is simply admirable. He always encourages students to participate in conferences, community engagements to get exposure to the intellectual network and to hone our leadership skills. The expectation what he has in our career development, literally drive us to work more towards our goal and success. He has the skill of identifying the students’ inherent talents and nurture that towards excellence by felicitating them through his grant sponsorships. I feel fortunate to have such a mentor at Navajo Technical University.
Though I am a Computer Science student at Navajo Technical University, Dr. Ragg’s friendly approach with students made me choose his Additive manufacturing classes as electives and join as one of his student interns. I like the way he steers students towards project-based learning through his classes. I have also been part of his outreach events. His organizing and administrative skills are so impactful that he will make us learn while we do. He will take care of all our needs and requirements and he will ensure that everything is taken care off. I am learning how to be involved and dedicated to meet the objectives and success in organizing any event as planned at NTU and also how to become a successful student in career and life through his guidance. This feeling would be the same for all our interns group I believe.
Dr. Ragavanantham's unique combination of teaching skills and research aptitude always inspired us students to dwell deep into the fields of Computer Aided Design & Manufacturing and other related fields. He has been a highly supportive faculty member and a voracious adviser to many students of Department of Mechanical Engineering at Anna University. His lectures in Design of Transmission Systems was interesting as he had the unique ability to reach out to the students to make concepts very clear. I had the good chance of working with him for the activities of Society of Mechanical Engineers at Anna University.
I had the opportunity to attend Dr. Ragavanantham’s classes while I was pursuing my undergraduate degree at College of Engineering, Guindy(2008-12). He taught Engineering Mechanics, Machine Design and Dynamics of Machines for my batch. I must say he is one of those prudent, sharp and dedicated lecturers in my college that made a positive impact on aspiring engineering students. He is highly motivated, innovative, persistent and most importantly has an excellent rapport with his students. He stays away from the conventional way of teaching but instead he uses a practical approach to explain complex concepts wherever possible. His classes are interactive and ensures students actively participate in the post lecture discussions. Apart from the academic duties, he was our undergraduate student advisor for 4 years.
"Ridiculously efficient" is the phrase that comes to mind when I think about Dr. Ragavanantham. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Ragavanantham for over ten years, during which he was my lecturer, project guide, internship coordinator, coach and mentor. Above all, I was impressed with Dr. Ragavanantham's ability to explain tough concepts of Thermodynamics and Engineering Mechanics at Anna University in a simple way making those big books redundant. Apart from his technical skills I admire his people management skills and decision making process.
Dr. Ragavanantham taught me several courses during my Undergrad and I really enjoyed all his lectures. His subject matter expertise and passion for teaching made his classes that much more insightful. He was also very approachable outside of class. I strongly recommend him for any position he is under consideration; I have no doubt he will continue inspiring students through his career.
"Ragavanantham Sir was my Class Advisor and Course Instructor for nearly three years starting from my first year. He also guided me during my final year project work. He shows a lot of dedication in ensuring that the concepts that are taught reaches us in a way that makes us enjoy learning. His method of teaching is unique in the sense it is more practical and application oriented rather than just theory based. He is very approachable and never hesistates to help and guide students in all aspects. His subject expertise and professional commitment is very inspiring."
I have known Professor Ragavanantham Shanmugham for 12 years and have interacted with him during my Electrical and Electronics degree in Jerusalem College of Engineering. During my course, he taught us Thermodynamjcs and Engineering Graphics. He’s the most dynamic faculty I have had in my college. He teaches the concepts very well substantiating it with great examples. His analogies to theories and technical aspects of thermodynamics has helped me remember the core concepts even now.
Professor Raghavan is a kind, caring and interesting teacher, and it has been pleasure being a student of him.
An important aspect of Professor Raghavan's interactions with students is his availability to answer questions and ability to provide just the right amount of structure yet allow the student some independence.
I personally have benefited from taking a class from Professor Raghavan and sincerely hope that his efforts as a teacher and adviser will be appreciated in his entire career.
Dr. Raghavanandham Shanmugam is a revolutionary teacher who challenges the monotony of conventional teaching through his unique and innovative approach combining education with entertainment. I had the privilege to attend his Thermodynamics and Engineering Drawing class in my UG - The subject that we assumed to be a tough and boring one was transformed into a fascinating subject about which we became more curious to learn. Apart from the fathomless knowledge he has in the subject ,the amount of enthusiasm he shows in teaching coupled with innovative methods is wonderful, unbeatable and remarkable as well.
